about this time last year, summer 2019, under feelings of inescapable hopelessness, I had a portentous vision of the future: technological takeover, societal collapse, runaway climate catastrophe. An apocalyptic end to civilization as we know it. This episode was the culmination of that vision. A story of mythic proportions, of humanity's ceaseless pursuit of "innovation" leading to our own demise. Last year, I had no idea how close we might come to that vision. And now, in the midst of a global pandemic, combined with climate uncertainty and a rising tide of fascism worldwide, it's a vision that feels a little more tangible, in both expected and unexpected ways. When I made this episode, apocalypse felt like a distant possibility. Now, it feels just beyond the horizon. What's in store for us? What comes next? It's time to revisit a future-past. my heart is heavy. one of my favourite djs ever, an inspiration to so, so many, the GOAT of ghetto house, the don of dirtyy trax, the originator, the indefatigable dj deeon has passed away. discovering chicago ghetto house was a revelation for young me, and that wouldn't have been possible without deeon. despite his monumental importance to dance culture, I can't shake the feeling that his death was avoidable. it's tragic that someone so talented and inspirational wasn't able to get adequate health care and struggled financially all the way to the end. let alone someone who helped grow the global dance music industry into the multi-billion dollar force it is today. anyway. lots of complicated thoughts, with no satisfying answers. i guess all that's left to do is what deeon woulda done... let's bang the box ✊

the world is on fire. black people are fighting of their lives. it seems like all that anyone can focus on are the images of brutalization, violence, destruction, and death. but it's important to see this moment within the larger, historical context of black liberation, and one thing that I always notice in this context is that black people have been imagining their futures for a very long time. In art and culture, this often took the form of what has retroactively been dubbed "afrofuturism." for this episode of copy/paste, I wanted to look back at these musical pioneers, who had the audacity to think big and dream bigger. it's time for an afrofuturist adventure.

My heart truly goes out to the west coast at this moment in history. Engulfed in flames and enveloped in smoke, provoking the absolutely terrifying awe of nature at its most energetic, it's a lot to take from the other side of the continent. So to process all this, I put together this episode: a meditation on fire, an offering to its potential for destruction, but also the renewal that inevitably follows in its wake. Despite the ability to harness fire powering civilizations for thousands of years, it is always humbling when moments like these remind us that we have but a small place within the ecology of this planet.

This past week one of my favourite djs of all-time, one of the greatest to ever do it, the Chicago house legend Paul Johnson passed away at the age of 50. I'm not gonna lie, this one hit me in the gut. but instead of asking pointless questions to the sky, i'm channelling this feeling into an all-PJ mix, traversing the decades, and arriving at the final release of his staggering career. it's all PJ, PJ forever. ✌️
